SBS Living Black
Last year, Living Black was in Alice Springs when news broke that the Northern Territory Government had approved uranium exploration at Angela and Pamela, just outside of the town.
Now the drilling has begun. One hundred and twenty holes will be dug into the ground by the end of the year to see if the area really does hold 12 thousand tones of uranium oxide, worth billions of dollars.
When the original approval was given, there was vocal opposition from locals, who say its unacceptable to put a uranium mine in the centre of Australia.

The NT government has granted an exploration licence to Cameco/Paladin to explore for Uranium in the Angela/Pamela tenement area less than 20 Kms south of the Alice Springs CBD.
You can still let the NT Government know that you oppose the exploration licence and mining by sending a letter to the Minister or your local member (Click Here for Contact list).
The NT Greens are opposed to uranium exploration, mining and export and are opposed to this highly inappropriate development for the recently awarded Solar City Alice Springs. | NT General Election August 9, 2008
Election Night Results
History making vote for The Greens
With election night figures in, the Greens in the NT have recorded an average 15.9% across the seats they contested and their highest ever Territory wide vote.
In Nightcliff Emma Young polled a stunning 23.6%, up from 15.7% in 2005 and the highest Greens primary vote ever in the NT! Emma Young said "It is a great result. With one in four voters choosing the Greens over the old parties whichever one forms government would do well to consider carefully the Greens policies favoured by voters.'
In Braitling, a seat contested for the first time, Greens Jane Clark outpolled Labor by 3.5%, winning 14.8% of the primary vote to Labor's 11% (also outpolling a Lorraine Braham-backed-Independent candidate) and came second on the primary vote count to the CLP. This is the first time the Greens have outpolled Labor in an NT election.
In Greatorex Lenny Aronsten polled 18.4%, just 1% behind the ALP candidate. In the Sadadeen Booth Greens outpolled the ALP gaining 20.4% of the primary vote!
In Port Darwin, another seat contested for the first time, Gary Abbott campaigned on protecting Darwin Harbour and polled a strong 15.6%. In Araluen Linda Chellew polled 13.5% just behind ALP government staffer John Gaynor (up from 9.5% in 2005). In Daly Dave Pollock polled 7.9% in a field of four with landclearing a strong focus (almost double the 2005 result).
In Alice Springs where the opposition to the Angela Pamela Uranium Licence was a strong feature of our campaign across the three seats the Greens matched the ALP vote. On the day the Greens beat the ALP in the polling booths in the North (Braitling), South (Yirara), East (Sadadeen) and West (Living Waters) and came very close in the other two.
Jane Clark Greens candidate for Braitling said;
"The ALP got a thumping in Alice Springs and the Greens vote more than doubled to 15.62% across the three Alice seats due in large part to Henderson's pushing the AP Uranium proposal onto Alice without any proper consideration of the impacts."
"The Mines Minister looks to have lost his seat and the people of Alice Springs expect his replacement, from whichever party forms government, to reject this short-sighted proposal, which threatens the health and wellbeing of Alice Springs residents."
"With no Independents and double digit swings against the ALP candidates, The Greens are now the only credible alternative to the CLP in Alice Springs."
