Statement from Senator Hanson-Young on Villawood Protests
Reports of a mass protest at Villawood Detention Centre last night, with buildings being burnt down, is incredibly distressing, and symptomatic of the failure of our immigration system, said the Australian Greens.
"Any violence or destruction of property cannot be condoned, and does not improve the situation for anyone. The Greens remain concerned about the safety and welfare of all those at the centre including asylum seekers, staff, and emergency personnel," said the Greens' Spokesperson for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young.
"The current detention network is untenable, and when you combine overcrowding, indefinite detention, and stretched resources, it is like a pressure cooker.
